FRED HEADS

In the late 19th century, London-born Fred Harvey built an empire with his chain of restaurants and hotels alongside the railroad in a dozen US states, including New Mexico. Known as Harvey Houses, the accommodations were lavish in their time, and those that remain continue to be celebrated by ‘Fred Heads’ and Fred-curious alike.

The Harvey House Museum in the tiny town of Belen celebrates the entrepreneur and the iconic Harvey Girls, who were transported to work at the establishments in exchange for $17.50 a month, free room and board, clean uniforms and tips. Aside from the Harvey House in Belen, others in New Mexico include The Castaneda Hotel in Las Vegas, La Fonda in Santa Fe, and the visitor center at the Puye Cliff Dwellings.
